The collected essays address issues vital to feminist inquiry such as race, sexuality, the body, queer politics, and the advent of capitalism, but also appropriate ground that has been hitherto regarded as terrain hostile to feminism, such as textual editing and theatre history.

About the Author
Dympna Callaghan is William P. Tolley, Professor in the Humanities at Syracuse University, New York. Her most recent book is Shakespeare Without Women (1999), and she has written widely on feminism and Renaissance Literature.

Definitely feminist perspectives against Shakespeare

This book is helpful to understanding the view of feminists who support idea of Shakespeare as a misogynist, but you get no other feminist viewpoint of him. Everything in this book supports the idea of Shakespeare's misogyny-- a position with which I disagree, because I believe that Shakespeare is a champion of women. I wrote a 40 page, graduate school level paper that clearly illustrated how he is NOT a misogynist, and got a 100% on it-- but I digress.

This book is a must have for any serious Shakespeare scholar who wants to be familiar with feminist sentiments against the bard. Just be aware that there also exists feminists who do NOT believe that Shakespeare was a misogynist, and none of their essays appear in this book. The title is misleading in making it sound as though all feminists have the same viewpoint, as is the undiversified content of it. No opinion against Shakespeare's alleged misogyny is included in the book. I give it three stars because it lacks fully one half of the feminist perspective. You can be feminist and not see him as a misogynyist, and there are other books out there that you will need to buy to get the complete picture.

Really a book on service societies and "mutual" seduction.

This small book based on the authors Ph.D is a small gem. It off course tell the story about the male hosts catering in dreams for their female audience, but that is in my opinion just a very small part of what the book is about. The book is way more an empirical "grounded" discussion of modern service and service societies. The book draws on a significant amount of literature inside critical Anthropology and theory, without ever becoming difficult to read. As an ethnographic study I hope it will be read inside my own field of organizational behavior and theory, and in particular service management. Where it can be as an important book as "the managed heart"

My only critical comment is, that a few places the analysis and explanations tilt towards, what I call an asymmetrical and "feminist privilege" performance analysis. where the wording and dynamics highlighted makes the female patrons "victims of exploitation" - despite the fact using the same criteria of analysis would make the male host - the exploited part. That said the book always comeback to its fundamental line of analyzing the performed lies, feelings and embodyment in the mutual seductive process, which makes it such an important book for our understanding of all services.

About the Author
John J. Burke is Library Director and Principal Librarian for the Gardner-Harvey Library on the Middletown regional campus of Miami University (Ohio). Prior to his current position, he gained a tremendous amount of experience with technology in libraries at the University of Cincinnati Raymond Walters College (Ohio) and Fairmont State College (West Virginia). He is a past president of the Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO) and a recipient of that organization's Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award. He is the author of several other books, including four previous editions of The Neal-Schuman Library Technology Companion: A Basic Guide for Library Staff. He has presented on a variety of technology topics at conferences hosted by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and the American Library Association (ALA), the Library Information and Technology Association (LITA) National Forum, and various regional and state conferences.
