About the Author
Wang Ju-Yi is a member of the first graduating class of the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (1962) and has practiced Chinese medicine for over 45 years. After three decades of seeing patients at the Xuan Wu Hospital of Chinese Medicine in Beijing, Dr. Wang retired to edit the prestigious journal Chinese Acupuncture. He has also been a pioneer in developing a private Chinese medical prac�tice in the quickly changing environment of modern Beijing. Jason D. Robertson is a graduate of the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (San Francisco). He has lived and worked in China and Taiwan for over eight years. He studied Chinese language at Washington and Lee University, and then completed a post-graduate language program at Taiwan Normal University. Mr. Robertson currently maintains a private practice in Seattle, and is on the faculty of the Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine.

An invaluable gem

I have to say a big thank you to the authors of this book for so painstakingly putting their hearts into making Classical Channel Theory so accessible and practical. There are many books out there with great information on Chinese Theory but few offer the same depth of clarity on to how to integrate that information into practice. There is not one Chinese Medical textbook on my shelf that I have read cover to cover like I did this one; the writing is engaging, succinct and sometimes very moving.

Coming from a background of classical acupuncture, channel theory was left out in our training and everyone was scrambling to take continuing education classes on this topic from classically trained practitioners after they graduated. Not having the funds or the time to take these classes I felt like I was missing out on a very important aspect of Chinese Medicine. After reading this book I can honestly say I feel like I have a firm foundation of Channel Theory to integrate into my practice. I have already seen dramatic changes in the outcome of my treatments and love the fact that I use much fewer needles to accomplish this. It is hard to express in words without sounding trite how valuable this book has been to me.

I highly recommend this book to any practitioner of Chinese Medicine or anyone interested in a very accessible explanation of Chinese Medical theory.

Suggests a missing link between clinical observation and general theory

Fills in the missing link between theories recorded in classic text and clinical observation. Unlike western medicine where theory dictates the direction of studies and trials which lead to the development of clinical guidelines, chinese medicine flows the opposite way, clinical observations points the direction of possible theories and slowly over time and generations/dynasties, theories develop. Hence it is not surprising that these theories often contradict each other causing pain and suffering to chinese medical students. This book delivers a possible missing link, suggesting probable mechanisms linking theories and clinical observations. This is by no means the only explanation, nor the best, but much like quantum electrodynamics, more than one theory can deliver the same result either way. Good read for students of chinese medicine.

Best Acupuncture Theory book that I own

I have a strong background in pure TCM from my school, and this book is so much more interesting and usable than Fundamentals of Chinese Medicine is. He even has a couple gems on herbalism interspersed in this book too. It has a lot of depth on Chinese Physiology yet is a pretty easy read (for a practitioner or upper-year student). I am not even near finished yet but I appreciate how it is layed out so far.

It seems like TCM is a conglomerate of disjointed empirical points that merely skims over the channels and wider connections within the body. This book on the other hand doesn't have a spleen chapter and a lung chapter, it has a Tai Yin chapter that breaks itself down into Lung and Spleen. It gives you so much info on how they are related that TCM doesn't delve into. It does go in microscopically and has some pretty nice speculations thrown in about Western Medical parallels which I found useful. But its the fact that it backs up and sees the interrelations that are system wide and more trully holistic that really helps me see the big picture, both literally and figuretively. It does not contradict my TCM training but only a few times from what I've read so far, yet it helps me apply the classics more and deepens my understanding. My intent seems to be sharper during treatments form just the little that I have read. I highly recommend this book to Acupuncturists of ALL styles.

Elizabeth V. August, MD (Hoboken, NJ) is a board certified family physician and currently serves as Chief Medical Officer of Bergen County, Riverside Medical Group. Dr. August was the former Chief Resident of Family Medicine at Hoboken University Medical Center. She has experience teaching USMLE Step 2 and Step 3 test preparation courses.

Niket Sonpal, MD (New York, NY) was the 2013-2014 Chief Resident at Lenox Hill Hospital – Northshore LIJ Health System. Dr. Sonpal is completing a GI fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital.

Conrad Fischer, MD (New York, NY), is one of the most experienced educators in medicine today. He is Associate Professor of Medicine, Physiology and Pharmacology at Touro College of Medicine. His breadth of teaching includes medical students, USMLE prep, and Specialty Board exams. He has seven "Teacher of the Year"" awards over the last ten years. In addition, Dr. Fischer was formerly the Associate Chief of Medicine for Educational and Academic Activities at SUNY Downstate School of Medicine. Dr. Fischer has been Chairman of Medicine for Kaplan Medical since 1999, and has held Residency Program Director positions at both Maimonides Medical Center and Flushing Hospital in New York City.

A Haunting Good Read

This book was recommended on The Huff Post on a blog about horror fiction. Strangely, it is a horror book, but not in the usual sense. I enjoyed reading this book and it completely held my attention. I'm not sure I was totally satisfied with the ending, but maybe all good books leave you with questions at the end.

While librarians should always be wary of titles bearing hyperboles, this is the ultimate visual dictionary produced by its publisher, which by extension makes it one of the best on the market. Many of Dorling Kindersley's pictorial reference works are cataloged for children's collections, but this tour de force deserves a place in all departments. With 14 sections, 270 major entries, and 30,000 terms, it is a vital addition to the field of visual dictionaries. Most important, every page glows in stunning color-a particularly useful feature in the sections on the human body and the universe. The illustrations are a combination of photographs and drawings. A 45-page, six-column index assures that any term in the book will quickly be found. Occasionally, as in the section on architecture, the feature illustrated is too small to be seen in detail or a pointer line is lost when crossing a dark area, but these problems are rare. There are also a few factual errors, which one hopes will be corrected in future editions. Of its competitors, The Facts on File Visual Dictionary (LJ 12/86) and What's What: A Visual Glossary of the Physical World (LJ 5/15/94) are both in black and white, and the Macmillan Visual Dictionary (available in a multilingual edition, LJ 3/1/93) consists mostly of drawings. This Ultimate Visual Dictionary is not the only pictorial dictionary to own, but it is by far the most visually impressive, and it comes at a good price. Enthusiastically recommended for all libraries.

The best Visual Dictionary out there

This is the most detailed visual dictionary that I've seen. If you're a well educated adult in the English language, perhaps a writer, and you're trying to choose between The Firefly Visual Dictionary, The MacMillan Visual Dictionary, The Scholastic Visual Dictionary, even the old What's What dictionary (which I think got the craze started), and DK's "Ultimate Visual Dictionary" - this book is absolutely your choice. As an alternative you can choose one of DK's "Eyewitness" Visual Dictionaries--these are sections from the Ultimate Visual Dictionary sold separately. Don't make the mistake of buying both unless there's a reason you want duplication. You CAN, however, get both this book and DK's "Ultimate Visual Dictionary of Science" which is a highly expanded version of the more generalized science sections of this book.

The Ultimate Reference

Old habits are hard to break. It's possible, though, that the "Ultimate Visual Dictionary" will cure you of yelling to anyone within hearing distance, "Do you remember what those little petals that sit on the top of a strawberry are called?" but I can tell you that when no one in the house comes running to your aid, you will be really glad to have this reference sitting right on your desk.
Libraries are nice. Heavens, the NET is even nice. But nothing can surpass a good, well-worn reference that you come to know intimately, know its strengths and its weaknesses.
The pictures in this book are colorful, clear and not so cute they're annoying; it is divided into sensible categories like "The Universe," "Prehistoric Earth," and "The Human Body." There is a concise index and an appendix of useful data like mathematical symbols and the ever-confounding metric conversions.
Now, sometimes you will need the name for something like the hole in the face of a guitar. You are praying there is a term that alliterates with the adjective you have already chosen to describe it. You rush to the wonderful book (after getting blank stares from anyone you ask about it first, of course), find the section for "music," and are disappointed to find that it is called a "sound hole." It's not a poetic term. It doesn't have any potential for a lyrical metaphor. Still, that's not the fault of the book, is it? At least you'll know that you are on your own for coming up with a term that is kinder to the ear or that, if you settle for "sound hole," there is nothing more accurate available.

This book takes everyday objects (and some historical objects as well), and makes them tremendously exciting by truly demonstrating how form follows function. The graphics are outstanding, and the attention to detail is unsurpassed by any text of its type of which I am familiar. The Ultimate Visual Dictionary 2000 is outstanding as a reference text for educators and students alike: I wish I had access to such a book when I was in school!

It is packed full of the basic (and some more advanced) facts that you learn and put in to practice during early lectures and placements. In fact I’m sure it's a handy reminder even for experienced physiotherapists every now and then. The plastic cover and size make the book both convenient and hard wearing and therefore ideal to keep in your pocket and use day to day. The layout into Respiratory, Neurological, Pharmacology and Musculoskeletal sections make for easy referencing and finding facts quickly and efficiently. This is aided further by the appendices and clear diagrams and illustrations. Colour coded text hightlighting titles from facts makes for easy browsing and information finding. Anatomy, specific tests, brain regions, dermatomes and myotomes, muscles and bones and common conditions are all covered in this goldmine of information. I can't fault this book in anyway when it comes to covering the basics of the knowledge and skills the physiotherapist needs and utilises day to day."

Bill Polian is currently an NFL analyst for ESPN. He spent 24 seasons as an executive with the Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, and Indianapolis Colts. He is a six-time NFL Executive of the Year. He lives in Cornelius, North Carolina. Vic Carucci is the senior editor of ClevelandBrowns.com, a cohost on “Cleveland Browns Daily” on ESPN 850 WKNR, and a SiriusXM NFL radio host. He is a New York Times–bestselling author of many books about football, including the coauthor of Do You Love Football?! with Jon Gruden, No Excuses with Charlie Weis, and Sunday Morning Quarterback with Phil Simms. I really enjoyed the behind-the-scenes stories of Bills' ascent to the GM ...

This book was extremely difficult to put down, I received it Wednesday and finished it Thursday night. I really enjoyed the behind-the-scenes stories of Bills' ascent to the GM position with the Bills, how he was ushered into the organization by Kay Stephenson (you will find out Kay did far more for the team than just take over after Chuck Knox), tested by Jim Ringo, and went on to be the man who secured Bruce Smith, Jim Kelly, Kent Hull and so many others for the team that played in 5 AFC title games in 6 seasons and won 4 of those. This also takes you inside the NFL Competition Committee, the beginnings of the Carolina Panthers and the big Peyton Manning - Ryan Leaf decision he had to make for the Indianapolis Colts. Any student of pro football will want to read this for perspective of the past 30 years in the game!

No Nonsense Look at the NFL

The book is exactly what you would expect from Bill Polian - clear, honest and to the point of all things NFL. The Buffalo years are covered most, and the stories about Jim Kelly and Marv Levy abound. I was expecting more from the Indy years, but was left with the impression that Polian didn't want to say more about Jim Irsay than he did.

Game Plan gives fans a look at the inner workings of an NFL franchise. It also provides tangible insights into the character of Bill Polian, a leader whose passion for and dedication to the game of football - and loyalty to the people with whom he worked - allowed him to make such a significant difference in so many of the lives he touched.

I first met Bill Polian in the summer of 1981. His day-job was selling advertising space. His second job was scouting for the Kansas City Chiefs. One night over dinner at a neighborhood steak house on Mt. Hope Avenue in Rochester, New York Bill outlined on the back of a bar napkin his vision for an NFL franchise. It was evident that his avocation was in organized football, not media sales.

Three years later, Bill was back in western New York as the Buffalo Bill's pro personnel director. Eighteen months later he was named their GM... the rest is history.

About the Author
Philip Steele has a passion for writing about history. He is a well-known author of more than one hundred children's books, including Castles, Pirates, Knights, The Best Book of Mummies, The World of Pirates, and The World of Castles. He was a student of medieval French and German literature, and has visited castles in England, France, Germany, Spain, and Poland. He has travelled to the Valley of the Kings and other sites of Ancient Egypt, and has met mummies face to face in the Cairo Museum. Philip now lives near Beaumaris and the other great castles of North Wales.

Nice book

This book provides a nice overview of medieval times, concentrating on knights and castles. It is full of color illustrations and pictures such as cut-away drawings of castles, town markets, the castle kitchen,and fashions of noblemen. Every other page has a full-page or nearly full-page illustration of some sort. The pages are also jam-packed with text explaining the little details that make history engaging. This would be a wonderful supplement for a study of the middle ages.

Very informative and surprisingly entertaining

This large and attractive book is an excellent introduction into the medieval world of knights and castles. The book is divided into five chapters. Chapter one is entitled The Age of Chivalry discusses medieval times, and how knighthood fitted in. The second chapter, Fortress Homes, discusses how castles were built and how they worked. Chapter three, Castle Life, is all about the daily life of the castle dwellers. In chapter four, Ready For Battle, we learn about medieval warfare and weapons. And finally, in chapter five, End of an Age, we learn about the end of the world of the knights, about other knights in history, and about how the medieval world lives on in tales of chivalry.

But, what makes this book so great is that it is literally chockfull with many excellent and brightly colored pictured and exploded diagrams. They really do an excellent job of bringing medieval times to life. (I especially liked the pages on medieval fashion!)

This is a great book, one that I found to be very informative, and surprisingly entertaining. Its many bright pictures are excellently drawn, and deserve an award all on their own. I really enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it to anyone interesting in the medieval world!
