After loving her first book, I made mistake of buying this latest book. It was terrible, not least bit funny and waste of money. I'm an avid reader and this ranks among the worst books I've ever tried to read.

About the Author

Dr SB Bhattacharyya, is a practising family physician and health informatics professional. He studied at Medical College, Bengal (aka Kolkata Medical College), graduating with MBBS from Calcutta University in 1986, before completing his MBA studies in 1997 with capstone thesis on telemedicine.

He has been associated with a number of MNCs in India as a domain expert in the field of Health Informatics that include iSOFT India, Oracle, GE Healthcare, and currently, Tata Consultancy Services. In this capacity he primarily functions as business solutions architect for IT systems in the healthcare, pharmaceutical and medical devices domains. In the past he has also been medical administrator of several small and medium-sized hospitals, besides being a practising family physician.

He is Member, National EHR Standardisation Committee, MoH&FW, Government of India, Healthcare Informatics Standards Committee, Bureau of Standards for India, and Honorary State Secretary, Indian Medical Association Haryana State

for 2015 IMA Year. He was President, Indian Association for Medical Informatics for the 2010 – 2011 session, having previously served as Treasurer and Secretary of that association.

A commentary on a mystical book

Mark Siet gives the opening translations of a few lines from each of the sections of Tikkunei Zohar (also spelled Tekunei) which he translated from a Hebrew translation of the original Aramaic. He follows this brief translation with a commentary which is based on the full section. The full section is not in his book. The commentary focuses on his understanding of kabbalistic principle and his studies in consciousness. He writes that his goal is to “bring forth the hidden mysteries [of the Torah].” Topics include ritual, prayer, the Tree of Life, the Tree of Knowledge of Good and evil, the mystical meaning of many things in the Torah, and much else.
What is the Tikkunei Zohar?
Most people have misconceptions about the Zohar (meaning, “luminous”) and the Tikkunei Zohar, also called Tekunei Hazohar, “rectification (or repairs) of the Zohar.” They believe the Zohar and the Tekunei are holy documents composed by Rabbi Simeon bar Yochai around the year 130 CE. However, scholars recognize that Moses d’ Leon, a Spaniard living in Granada, wrote the Zohar around 1286, that parts of the book were added by others after his death, and that the work is a pious forgery. Zohar, “luminous,” alludes to the notion that God illuminates the people through mysticism. But while ostensibly dealing with enlightenment, the Zohar is usually very difficult to understand and many of its ideas are mystical, which are hard if not impossible to fathom.
The Tekunei Zohar is a separate document than the Zohar. Its first printing was in 1558. It contains seventy commentaries. The idea of “repair” is not to fix the thirteenth century Zohar but to repair God.
Both the Zohar’s and Tekunei’s basic teaching is the doctrine of the Sefirot, “numbers,” ten divine entities (parts of God) that function in ten different ways. The lowest entity is shekhinah, also called malkhut, which mystics see as the anthropomorphic feminine part of God that interacts with humans.
The mystics feel that the ten parts of God became separated and that humans have a duty to help God become one with all his ten disjointed parts reassembled. When this is done, the messianic age will arrive.
While mystically-minded people may enjoy the Zohar and Tekunei or parts of it, rationally-minded people will find it hard to understand and difficult to accept ideas they do understand. They find the notions in these books especially difficult since most mystics take them literally. Some examples of teachings in the Tekunei are:
• Prayers form the basis for the throne upon which God can reside.
• God’s name Adonai is the chariot for y-h-v-h (another name for God).
• The lowest part of the ten parts of God is female, which has to be reunited with the other ten parts of God. People should learn from this and unify with their feminine nature.
• There is no Torah without fear and no fear without Torah.
• The twelve zodiacal signs determine the sign for each hour and what its aspect is.

The chapter on data structures covers singly linked lists, doubly linked circular lists, hash tables and binary trees. Test programs are presented for all these data structures. There is a chapter on optimization techniques and 3 chapters on specific optimizations. One chapter covers how to efficiently count the 1 bits in an array with the most efficient version using the recently-introduced popcnt instruction. Another chapter covers using SSE instructions to create an efficient implementation of the Sobel filtering algorithm. The final high performance programming chapter discusses computing correlation between data in 2 arrays. There is an AVX implementation which achieves 20.5 GFLOPs on a single core of a Core i7 CPU.

Decent introduction in less time

This book is not such a thick tome as many assembly books and allows a person wanting to learn assembly to do so in approximately ten weeks with 5 hours of study per week. I agree with the author that chapter 4 should just be skipped or read casually. Chapter 4 needs a lot more explanation or outside study to really get a handle on this memory topic. However, the rest of the book is good and gives a good introduction to 64 bit Assembly in Linux. Its emphasis is on science/engineering and optimization and not on device drivers or kernel writing.

*** When working through this book, be sure to also have the Intel manual with its alphabetic listing of assembly instructions on the screen also. It will be your main source for moving beyond basic assembly and is a good supplement from the beginning.

Assembly is so much nicer in 64 bit with all the extra registers, instructions, etc.

I have both the first and second edition. Some have said the ebe figures are hard to read in the 2nd edition, but they are easy to read in the copy I have.

The second addition adds additional exercises and explanation. It is worth getting it instead of the first edition. The hundreds of dollars asking price for the first edition is a ridiculous joke! Don't buy it, just get the second edition.

So far, this is the only book on 64bit Assembly Programming!

I do like the layout of this book. It has a couple of problems for the IDE it uses.
I would recommend both yasm and gold as the compiler and linker respectively. The author prefers ld even though it is not optimized for 64bit like gold is.
Currently, the author will respond to emails if you have problems or suggestions.
The book itself is well laid out and covers appropriate subjects in order. It is good for the beginner/intermediate as a learning tool and handy for the expert as a reference book for the 64bit commands/registers.

Brilliant introduction to assembly on 64 bit (x86-64)

I am through most of the book and am very happy I added it to my personal library. It is a very useful and effective introduction to assembly language - one which I would want to recommend as a mandatory text in the engineering syllabus. It goes through lot of details which make things quite clear - floating point representation in memory, different segments of the program, implementation of data structures like arrays, linked lists (structures), binary trees, hash tables and has a chapter relating to recent SSE and AVX instructions. Over all very happy on this purchase. So not a reference manual (~ 250 pages) but a book I'd really use and keep coming back.

The Verilog Hardware Description Language (Verilog-HDL) has long been the most popular language for describing complex digital hardware. It started life as a prop- etary language but was donated by Cadence Design Systems to the design community to serve as the basis of an open standard. That standard was formalized in 1995 by the IEEE in standard 1364-1995. About that same time a group named Analog Verilog International formed with the intent of proposing extensions to Verilog to support analog and mixed-signal simulation. The first fruits of the labor of that group became available in 1996 when the language definition of Verilog-A was released. Verilog-A was not intended to work directly with Verilog-HDL. Rather it was a language with Similar syntax and related semantics that was intended to model analog systems and be compatible with SPICE-class circuit simulation engines. The first implementation of Verilog-A soon followed: a version from Cadence that ran on their Spectre circuit simulator. As more implementations of Verilog-A became available, the group defining the a- log and mixed-signal extensions to Verilog continued their work, releasing the defi- tion of Verilog-AMS in 2000. Verilog-AMS combines both Verilog-HDL and Verilog-A, and adds additional mixed-signal constructs, providing a hardware description language suitable for analog, digital, and mixed-signal systems. Again, Cadence was first to release an implementation of this new language, in a product named AMS Designer that combines their Verilog and Spectre simulation engines.

Excellent introduction to the language & excelent reference

This book is currently the only up-to-date reference book for Verilog-A and Verilog-AMS (the book by Fitzpatrick is very incomplete and way out of date).

It introduces the language by using a series of relatively simple yet useful examples. In doing so it gets you up and running quickly and then builds your knowledge of the language. It takes you through Verilog-A in some depth, then presents enough Verilog-HDL (the digital subset) to give analog designers a workable understanding of Verilog, and then covers Verilog-AMS in depth.

The book has one chapter that acts as a complete reference for the manual for VerilogA/MS and and excellent index. I use the book as a reference as I write models and can always find what I am looking for very quickly.

In short, I recommend it whole-heartily. It is an essential book for anyone that uses Verilog-A or Verilog-AMS.

An introduction to Verilog AMS

I am new to verilog A and even newer to Verilog AMS. I thought the book was a reasonable introduction to the language, but I prefer a longer text with more content. The book is only of moderate length and expensive as seems to be typical of Kluwer texts. There are also some spots where clarity, at least to myself, was lacking. A user will need the Verilog AMS license from Cadence to use this language. Lacking such a license, I was never able to apply the mixed signal info from the text. For the pure Verilog A user who is doing only analog and not mixed signal sims, this book may not offer an advantage over Fitzpatrick's book even though it is newer. For the practicing engineer, this text is a far better way of getting introduced to Verilog AMS than Cadence's cryptic documentation.
