What's more, we have offered but one solution to the problem, the two-way transaction of God's forgiveness of sinners. Yet when one person harms another, that action not only violates God's will, but also unleashes anguish and misery in the victim, scarring his or her soul. We are right to speak of the sinner's need of forgiveness, but we have forgotten to take the next step: to seek healing for the victims. Having drawn the map of salvation for sinners, we have left it to those who have been sinned against to find their own way to wholeness and peace.
Andrew Sung Park argues that it is time for the church and its theology to face this issue and work toward its remedy. It is time to give a name to the suffering of those who have been sinned against and to seek their healing. He proposes that the Korean religious term han can serve as an instrument in this endeavor. While it is an intricate concept, in short han can be defined as the psychic and spiritual hurt caused by unjust oppression and suffering. As the church seeks to play its distinctive role in healing the wounds of abuse and violence, the idea of han can be a powerful tool. It can allow pastors and other caregivers to explore the depths of anguish that victims experience. It can illustrate the fact that, having sinned against their victims as well as against God, the perpetrators of violence and abuse must seek salvation not only by asking for God's forgiveness, but also by working for the healing of those they have wronged.

A book for the wounded

Andrew Sung Park's work on the healing of deep wounds (han) was extremely helpful to me. I pastor a congregation of deeply wounded persons and constantly struggle with how to convey Christological concepts to them that will not be considered judgmental. Park has provided me with an excellent thological resource regarding this dilemma.
His presentation of the difference between the oppressor and the oppressed was a helpful addition to my normal attempt to differentiate between guilt and shame. His conveyance of Jesus ministering more to the sinned against than to sinners provoked me to revisit my evangelical notions of soteriology. And, while I think that he overemphasized Jesus ministry to those of "han," I recognize that this overstatement was his attempt to apply a corrective to Jesus' ministry as being primarily about forgiveness of sins.
As I read this work I was reminded of the numerous liberation theologies I have encountered. Yet, what struck me about this work was the absence of politics as usual. This theology focused on the deep healing and forgiveness work of Jesus--not the retributive aspects so often found in liberation theologies. I am greatly indebted to Park for this "politics" of Jesus presentation--reminiscent of my Anabaptist leanings.
This book is a must read for anyone entrusted with the care of deeply wounded persons. It provides a Christological hermeneutic that will better position a spiritual care giver to offer the healing of God to those oppressed and wounded.

Contending for the Wounded

From Hurt to Healing: A Theology of the Wounded, by Andrew Sung Park, offers students of the Christian Scriptures a much needed interpretation on behalf of those persons suffering from han: emotional anguish, soul suffering. Much gospel preaching concentrates on announcing the good news of God's forgiveness through Jesus Christ to all of us who have sinned. In addition to this traditional emphasis (or, one may suggest, instead of this traditional emphasis), Park also issues a call for us to consider the Scripture's good news for those among us who are victims of others' neglect and abuse - the sinned against.
In order to construct his argument that God's priority is actually for the wounded, the shamed, and the offended over against guilty offenders in need of the forgiveness of God and others, Park goes to great lengths to interpret and, in significant ways, reinterpret the traditional understanding of the primary message of the gospel: namely, God's forgiveness for sinners. Parks is right (and quite convincing) in his contention that Christians must understand and underscore the Scripture's concern for the wounded of this world. At the same time, though, one may rightly question the theological lengths to which Park goes to swing the pendulum in favor of his thesis.
I would recommend the book to anyone who has ever wondered whether the Bible has more to offer the suffering and abused than most of us preachers have been delivering. As an interpreter and proclaimer of the Christian message, I certainly benefited from engaging the tenets set forth by Parks. For those not interested in wrestling with the major theological reconstruction that Parks builds to support his passionate and much needed defense for the wounded, though, the book may enrage more than enlighten. Yet I would still suggest serious consideration of his important convictions on behalf of those who are suffering.

A Man After Job's Own Heart

One of Andrew Park's significant contributions to the church is his insight into the "Theology Under God's Wrath." He emphasizes that the church has too long preached a one-sided theology of a sin-repentance formula for everyone, including the sinned-against and the wounded. He maintains that the church has wronged victims by applying this theology to them and that it is past time for us to provide a sensible theology of caring about the victims of sin and tragedy (20). Bravo! Christian people are deeply wounded and they look to the church for answers and receive simplistic advice which only serves to deepen their pain.
Park introduces and develops the Korean religious concept of han. In short han is the emotional wound or pain that is caused by pain and suffering. As he develops his theme of han it seems that he is trying to reinvent the wheel. Introducing new language and a new concept for suffering is not what is most needed. The church can determine the difference between suffering and sin, thanks to Job. The reason we preach the one-sided theology of sin-repentance is that we know nothing else, not because we are trying to purposefully wound the wounded. What the church needs are tools, education and strategies for helping those who suffer. His chapter on forgiveness is the most helpful in the entire book.
The practical application he provides is the strength of his writing. However, his theology is confusing and questionable. In any event, if one focuses on his primary theme which is that the wounded have a different set of needs which are not met by the sin-repentance formula, his writing can be very helpful. We, the church, need to learn what those needs are and how to meet them.
