Universal salvation, he maintained, was the only way to coherently affirm the victory of God over evil. Allin's book is one of the first detailed attempts to show that global salvation was not some modern heresy, but an ancient Christian tradition with a serious claim to catholicity and orthodoxy. Turning the tables on the critics, Allin boldly argued that universalism, far from being dangerous, was actually needed to defend the orthodox faith of the church. Very excited about this!

With an introduction by Thomas Talbott, numerous annotations by Robin Parry, and the main text of Thomas Allin's famous 19th Century defence of Christian Universalism largely unchanged, this is a precious resource. Well done to Robin Parry for all the hard work in putting it together. These are very exciting times to be alive for evangelicals who hold to the larger hope. Fifteen to twenty years ago there was virtually nothing on the market. Thank God, the times are now changing. Robin Parry and Thomas Talbott have been a big part of that process, and this reader is extremely grateful.

This is a truly awesome book. After growing up Southern Baptist I read “Love Wins” by Rob Bell, and I was intrigued with the ideas, but I didn't want to fall for some modern heresy. If I was going to go against the flow on something as important as the doctrine of hell, I wanted it to make sense, I wanted it to be Biblical, and I wanted proof that other theologians of note had understood the Bible that way. So, I've ready many books recently on universal reconciliation, and this is by far the best. In it, Allin demolishes the doctrine of eternal torment on philosophical grounds, Biblical grounds, and by showing that the earliest consensus among the Greek speaking church fathers supported Universal Reconciliation. He proved to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that I could believe in Universal Reconciliation knowing that I had the truth of God, the Bible, and other great Christians on my side. George MacDonald's books really opened me up to the universal father heart of God, and his Unspoken Sermon on Justice convinced me of the truth that a hell of eternal torment could not exist, but MacDonald didn't want to get into controversy and argue doctrine so he never proved anything. Thomas Allin is not afraid to engage the debate forcefully and passionately on all fronts.
If you read only one chapter in this book, read Chapter 8 which lists New Testament evidence for universal salvation. I read it to my wife and you could see her relax as she realized her husband was not losing his salvation. At the very least you'll be hard pressed to think of Universal Reconciliation as a Biblically unsupported heresy after that.
After reading this book, if you need still more proof from early church history, then check out Ilaria Ramelli's “The Christian Doctrine of Apokatastasis” (but you will need to get it from the library since it is priced out of reach for mere mortals). Ilaria provides 900+ pages of Patristic scholarship supporting what Thomas Allin says in considerably more succinct fashion here.
I also have to say that Robin Parry's footnotes and formatting are well worth the extra expense if you are considering getting a different version of this text. Victorians had an annoying habit of quoting French and Latin without translation, and Parry has solved the problem here.
Lastly, if you are just beginning your explorations on this topic, let me welcome you to the realm of a vastly more loving and more powerful God than you ever dreamed, and a future and a hope of greater joy than you can possibly imagine. Be a Berean (Acts 17:11) and check out the scriptures to see if these things be so.

Great Re-release. Thanks Robin Parry!

I've already read and loved this book in its (more or less) original form. Robin Parry has added a LOT to it with his footnotes and all the research he's done to track down Allin's sources. He's also included a short bio on Allin himself, and I believe this cost him quite a lot of research time as well. The book is well-formated for Kindle, and a joy to navigate. Very satisfied, and glad I decided to buy this updated copy. Thanks, Robin!
