I love chickens, and Pam's book reminded me of just how much!
The illustrations are beautiful and the book is a grand instruction manual
for those who aspire to raising chickens, or just for researchers like me on the marvelous variety of domestic fowl.

3.5 stars, Fun drawings and Lots of Information

The Field Guide of Chickens has good information on 60 various chicken breeds. It covers the common to the not so common chicken breeds. The book also has information on chicken behavior and history. The color paintings of the chicken breeds were pretty too.

The presentation of this book is very attractive. The paper stock is very sturdy and it will survive repeated reading.

The only things I didn't like in the book were that it had paintings of the breeds instead of actual photos. Also it didn't cover many breeds of chicken. Though, I would still recommend this book for anyone that collects chicken books.

Overall, it's a nice little guide that I'd purchase again.

Before purchasing, be aware that this slender, sturdy, and attractive hardback book has only paintings of the chicken breeds, not photos, and very brief descriptions. The same information and comparable paintings are available at no cost in the beautifully illustrated Murray McMurray Hatchery catalog each year-- request a free catalog and you'll have most of the same information as well as a way to purchase the breeds you read about! The Oklahoma State University poultry website and other sites also have this info.

this book is a joke...

i'm sad this was promoted as being helpful for hormonal imbalances whereas really this is just a poorly written, poorly cited and not very effective diet book. if you were eating fast food and processed/refined things prior to following this diet, it might help you to clean out your system and lose weight but this is absolutely not a hormone reset and has very little if any merit to the science of the approach. i can tell you it hasn't worked for me so far, i'm 14 days in, and i'm following it to a T and have spent hundreds on all the extra suggested supplements.
as other reviewers have mentioned the products promoted such as the shakes and bars contain some of the very things you are supposed to avoid during the diet and i also didn't receive any of the bonus material promised.

this book and protocol seemed too good to be true, and definitely are. how great would it be to find a book that truly could approach hormone resetting and balancing from a scientific and qualified perspective- despite Sara's credentials, this falls short of even providing an informative, well written opinion... it is full of blanket statements and brief quotes that don't have any real merit or apply to what is being pushed. the casual and "i'm your friend" approach is fine but if that doesn't come with what's being promised it just seems like a creepy money hungry marketing scheme... and it's sad that so many "health experts" prey on people who could really use advice on how to fix what ails them...

i have 7 days+ re-introduction left and if something magical happens i will update my review but i highly doubt it will shift since i'm 2/3 in and haven't had any of the magical promised results.

Don't waste your money. I was very excited about reading this book, because I have been struggling with my weight since entering menopause. Although I eat mainly vegetables and protein in the form of chicken and fish (with very little red meat) I have been unable to lose any weight. This diet plan is something I am already doing and it is not working for me.
I feel the diet is also very misleading. Dr. Gottfried gives you 7 resets that are supposed to last for 3 days each, but that's not exactly true. Reset 1 is meatless (estrogen reset); Reset 2 is sugar free (insulin); Reset 3 is fruitless (leptin); Reset 4 is caffeine free (cortisol); Reset 5 is Grain Free (thyroid); Reset 6 is dairy free (growth hormone); Reset 7 is toxin free (testosterone). The truth is you are eliminating red meat, alcohol, sugar, fruit, caffeine, grains, dairy and toxins for the entire 21 days. Take a look at the menu she gives you on day 1, the meatless menu:
Breakfast
1 cup lightly brewed tea
omelet made with three eggs
1/2 cup asparagus
1 cup cooked spinach
1 tbs coconut oil
Lunch
Detox Shake made with 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, The shake is made with her protein powder, her fibre, kale and MCT oil
1 cup chopped kale,
1 cup chopped bell peppers
1 ounce raw cashews
Dinner
6 ounces wild-caught salmon
1 cup steamed broccoli
2 cups salad with 2 tbs oil and red wine vinegar
1 cup chopped artichoke hearts
1 cup chopped purple cabbage and 1/2 cup romaine lettuce

I rest my case. If you follow her suggested meal plan for each reset you are actually eliminating everything on day 1. All of the menu plans for each reset are similar, chicken or fish or eggs or a shake. You don't reintroduce any of the foods you eliminated until day 22. Reentry starts on day 22 and you are only supposed to reintroduce 1 food at a time every three days. The theory is you need to see how your body reacts to the food that had been eliminated. So it's not really a 21 day reset. It's a 42 day reset! I am so disappointed with the the book. It is absolutely nothing new. Please save your money.

it seems like just a general diet book with nothing specifically set ...

I thought from the podcast that this would be something different than it is. I know my hormones are out of balance and I couldn't find any help with normalizing them per what hormone was out of balance, it seems like just a general diet book with nothing specifically set for what may be out of balance. It is more for losing weight than balancing hormones, which I don't need. If I can find out differently by reading more, I will re do this review. However, there were also bonuses promised when you pre-order this book, which I did, but when I did what was required to prove it, they said they couldn't tell(and it was like an automated message) and gave me two other emails to contact, which I did, and have not received any communication in return. The bonuses seemed like they would be more helpful for my issue than the book, which why it is important to me. I also believe if you promise something, it is ethical to follow through. So right now I get the feeling they were just a way to sell the book, and there's really no customer concern there at all. Right now I'm considering returning the book. I give a lot of reviews and am usually very fair wiith them, but I think the way this has been handled is very unprofessional.

A Sure Guide to Emotional Health

Emotions may not have the best reputation. We don't want to base our lives on fluctuating feelings, but are all emotions bad? On the contrary, as Gary D. Chapman, the author of The Five Love Languages, writes in the foreword: "God made us with capacity for emotions. In God's design, emotions were meant to help us process life in a positive manner. . . . Emotions are not designed to control our lives, but to draw our attention to life. Positive emotions help us enjoy life, while negative emotions inform us that something needs attention."

Author Harold Sala maintains that our greatest struggles are fought within our hearts as we deal with "frustration, stress, lack of self-confidence, fear, feelings of inadequacy and inferiority, and the inability to cope with circumstances that are not to our liking."

Choices can make us better or bitter. Sala walks us through relevant Biblical principles that we can choose to apply. We can thereby make our emotions work for us in the process of becoming more of what God wants us to be.

The first two chapters, which deal with our uniqueness and God's acceptance of us in Christ, are worth the price of the book. It's not that this introductory section, or any of the material that follows; is anything new. I just like how clear, concise and complete these first two chapters present the importance of having an identity established in Christ. If like me you have struggled with esteem and acceptance issues, this material alone can be life-changing. Just reading it I felt a little like Pilgrim being relieved of his burden in The Pilgrim's Progress. Grasp these truths and feel the weight of negative emotions roll-off your person.

On the matter of self-acceptance, Sala writes, "When you can accept yourself as a person of worth and value, you can then accept adverse circumstances in life and realize that God has not forsaken you nor is He punishing you, but rather He is still guiding in the affairs of your life and home no matter what happens. . . . You don't consider difficulty to be punishment because you know your sins have been dealt with and you are God's child." Sala doesn't discount the fact that at times God will discipline us. I just appreciate him highlighting that when things go wrong, it doesn't mean that God is not there or that He is necessarily against us.

Another thing I like about Sala is his liberal use of stories to illustrate his points. This is not dry reading. Sala draws on many years of ministry experience, which includes a radio program heard on more than 1,000 stations around the world. Over the years he has collected numerous responses to his broadcasts, and he often judiciously shares correspondence and anecdotes for interest and emphasis. If sermon illustration is becoming a lost art, you would never know it from reading Sala.

Even so, his writing is not cluttered with too much of a good thing. He knows how to be brief, which makes this a reference that one can turn to repeatedly for inspiration and help. It's written for lay people, but church leaders will also find that it's a good resource.

Sala is never heavy-handed, but his easy to follow applications gently challenge. For those who are hurting, this book offers a wealth of practical steps toward recovery.

In addition to several chapters focusing on the intricacies of emotions, separate chapters are used to explore anger, fear, boredom, stress and burnout.

Reading Sala is like having your own personal counselor who encourages making friends with your emotions. We must respond rather than react to them, and Sala is an expert at showing us how. His aim is that we become all that God wants us to be.

"Making Your Emotions Work for You" is of solid and highly recommended reading for Christians who struggle to keep hold of themselves.

This book tells about a surveillance society far more insidious and pervasive than anything George Orwell ever imagined. Land of the Free?

Author Jim Redden wrote "Snitch Culture" in order to bring together disparate examples of how our government and our society has embraced the concept of "snitching," or informing on one another. Everybody professes to hate a snitch. Think of all the various labels we have for someone who informs on another person: snitch, tattletale, rat, stool pigeon, whistleblower, fink, and several others I am probably forgetting. None of these words convey a positive image, do they? Think of all of the media images that show what happens to someone who snitches on another person and you will usually discover that these images are not positive ones. Nowadays, however, we live in a new era, an era that encourages citizens to inform on other people. A respected national magazine made corporate whistleblowers their "Person of the Year" recently, if memory serves me correctly. Law enforcement always pays good money for information on people who commit even the most mundane crimes. And the less said about schools the better. Perhaps our society suffers from a massive case of hypocrisy, where we believe one thing (ratting out another person is bad) but praise it nonetheless (someone broke the law! Get them!). I suspect most of us have no idea how many schemes our ruling institutions have cooked up in order to amass information about us. Certainly, the recent "Patriot Act" enacted after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack still receives much attention from watchdogs that criticize the government for its sudden interest in our library records. Well, Redden rides to the rescue with chapter after chapter of documented skullduggery from nearly any institution you can think of, both public and private.
It is difficult to summarize the most egregious cases outlined by Redden in this book because they are all horribly invasive and oftentimes ethically wrong. Perhaps the widespread use of informants in legal prosecutions ranks the highest, where federal and state attorneys pay money to nearly anyone with a story to tell. The fact that sometimes this information is an out and out lie doesn't bother the authorities in the least, even when wrong information leads to the death or injury of an innocent person. Redden finds such an account in the case of a man seriously wounded by police when a drug snitch threw his name out at random even though this man was completely innocent of any crime. The federal government doesn't stop there. The FBI and government intelligence apparatuses routinely spy on the American people, often in the name of "National Security." These institutions even want to know what you are looking at on your computer, and have made attempts to do just that by attaching spy equipment to some of the biggest servers in the country. Redden goes so far as to claim that there is no war on drugs, terrorism, or youth violence but only a war on the American people over gathering information on all of us.
It isn't just government resorting to immoral information gathering. Corporations and private watchdog groups do it quite often. Companies now monitor the Internet in order to see what their employees are doing. This may not sound like a bad idea, as wasted labor does impact a business's bottom line. The problem comes when bosses punish people for running private websites on their own time and not accessing them from work. Yes, this apparently happened in several instances, at least according to Redden. Private watchdog groups present another example of the snitch culture. The author cites the infamous case of the Anti-Defamation League's illegal gathering of information. The ADL, ostensibly dedicated to rooting out dangerous racist groups throughout the country, also spies on just about anyone it wants to regardless of political affiliations. A raid on their San Francisco office turned up thousands upon thousands of documents on organizations and people with absolutely zero links to racist organizations. Even worse, the ADL often shares information with police departments around the country, forming a link between private and government institutions that like to spy.
War and the threat of war constitute one of the major tenets of the snitch culture. During the conflict in Kosovo, suspicious evidence exists that an anti-war website created to oppose NATO operations in this former Yugoslavian province suffered a computer attack from the United States military. The website wasn't really hurting anyone, just providing news accounts of activities in the region with a view towards stopping the war. The operators of the site soon learned that a private watchdog had labeled their efforts "militia" activity, and shortly thereafter the site went down after being bombarded by so many requests for information that the server crashed. Scary stuff, even if the operators of the site will never know for sure that military computer specialists launched the attack, but there are several pieces of compelling evidence that our armed forces were behind this computer generated assault. I could go on and on about the endless examples Redden cites regarding snitching, spying, and information gathering.
The one drawback to the book is one that most reviews mention: Redden rarely distinguishes between times when snitching is useful and when it is illegal. In this author's world, ALL information gathering efforts fall into negative categories. In a way, I do agree with his analysis even though there are cases where informing on other people is a necessity. Redden recognizes that human nature always seems to make us go overboard on something when a crisis arises. Therefore, even good spying nearly always leads to abuses. "Snitch Culture" does a good job collating information about these massive abuses, but does little to present realistic solutions to the problem.

JOHN DREW is a specialist in McKinsey & Company's Practice in the UK. He has applied lean across a number of sectors including automotive, aerospace, steel, consumer goods and retail. He has previously worked for Toyota, who have been a leading pioneer of lean production methods and Rover Group, where he was responsible for introducing lean production into the manufacture of new products, including the Rover 75.

Excellent for beginners

As a Japanese management consultant working in the U.S, I was curious how good this book is...and found out that this book contains all the essential elements of lean production and its philosophy. Very good introduction to understand all the basics. It seems many of the concepts and tools were customized so that U.S. people can better understand the concepts...but to be honest, they are a bit different from the original philosophy that Ohno Taichi, the founder of Toyota Production System, had written in his books. I would strongly encourage to read the original books written by Ohno...it is always better to read the original books if you really want to understand the REAL concepts. But again, this book "Journey to Lean" is a very good introcution for begginers.

Good introduction to lean.

This book take you through the basic consepts of lean. And it does so in an easy and interesting way. The examples in the book are well constructed and told. This is a book written by persons who have practise lean themeselves. It is a great book for an manager who want to learn about lean or a student that would like to get some " real life" understanding of lean compared to other books out there which are to theoretical.

Lean command and control?

A major consulting company demonstrating that lean has become main stream. l enjoyed reading the book, its lucid and very well written.

However, the customer is strangely absent for some reason and it does take a pedestrian, slightly pedantic and bureaucratic approach to organisational change for my taste, But its a journey after all.

I detect a high degree of bias from the application of Lean manufacturing techniques into the world of services which is heavy handed and inappropriate. Having seen the approach outlined in this book implemented I am slightly uneasy about its assumptions about people motivation and control.

All that said, if you are in manufacturing, it was a good read and a good introduction to the lean journey concept, Just ease off the micro-control fixation and it will work much better.

Picking up where the brilliantly successful Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook series left off, the Borgenichts (David co-wrote Worst-Case) present matter-of-fact advice on how to perform James Bond-like stunts with incredible ease. They interviewed doctors, shark hunters, former prisoners, bus drivers, wedding planners, boxing coaches, skydivers, escape artists and a multitude of other experts to provide the best, most succinct tips for a variety of scenarios. The "Good Guy Skills" section is the strongest, as it explains techniques for maneuvers many readers wouldn't have a clue how to execute. There's information on interrogating a suspect, saving a patient who's flatlined, saving someone who's hanging from a cliff and spy-proofing a hotel room. The random facts are oddly intriguing: e.g., to catch a great white shark, don't chain a chunk of meat to the end of a pier; when a suspect looks to the left during an interrogation, it often means she's lying. The Borgenichts then offer counsel on situations involving love (to stop a wedding, have your speech planned ahead of time), the paranormal (the Jedi mind trick is simple manipulation) and escape (try getting on the wrong train if you need to fake out pursuers at a train station). Throughout, quotes from The Fugitive, The Shawshank Redemption and other films remind readers how one might find oneself in such predicaments. Almost practical and definitely entertaining, this is one how-to guide Clint Eastwood and Charlie's Angels would not want to be without.

A Pretty Good Book

The Action Hero's Handbook is a fascinating little book. While I was a little disappointed in the Vulcan Nerve Pinch and the Jedi Mind Trick, the rest of the book had very interesting and potentially useful information like, how to get out of handcuffs and how to escape a sinking cruise ship.

This is a great book to give to people who live unusual lives or a book to buy for yourself if you're the kind of person who travels or just find adventure wherever you go. You might not have a great need to catch a white shark, but it's always possible these days to encounter someone with a gun that you may need to disarm or deal with an intoxicated driver who seems bent on running you over, and the Action Hero's Handbook tells you what to do in both circumstances.

As great as the book is, I gave it four stars only because a few minor things are missing: for example, while the book tells you how to avoid getting hit by a car or a truck, it doesn't cover SUVs, which to me is an important little detail. But overall, it's a great book to have.

This book is hilarious. I bought it as a gift for a friend of mine and had to read part of it before I gave it to him. I was laughing the whole time and he found it funny as well.

"Chicks only like guys with great skills" - Napoleon Dynamite

This is a great "coffee table" book. Something anyone would find interesting and amusing.

The book is broken down into 5 sections:

1. Good Guy Skills

2. Love Skills

3. Paranormal Skills

4. Fighting Skills

5. Escape Skills

With each skill, the author introduces when and why an action hero will need to have the skill to follow. This portion of each section is humorous. The author then goes on to actually describe the skill, in step-by-step fashion. The instruction in this book actually comes from individuals who have great experience with the given skills. Upon seeing this book, you may not exactly expect to get official information, as it is filed in the "homor" section at most booksellers, but you are in fact getting solid, real information, which I feel makes the whole book even funnier. It's as if this is the handbook for the training of the modern real-life action hero.

It's a very amusing read - or just something to thumb through while you're waiting for your wife/girlfriend to get ready to go out.

Highly recommended.
