Playing the Language game to WIN

This book is about how to be an expert sophist. But lets say that you are a philosopher, and not a sophist. A lover of TRUTH (all caps), and a despiser of slick, fast-talking rhetoricians. Then you probably need a reason as to why you shouldn't be so concerned with needing reasons. If you are perceptive enough to see it, the author gives you one in the first sentence of his book. It starts out "Everything in this book is a lie". So if you love truth so much, and are so concerned about dividing sentences up into those which are true, and those which are false, then tell us, is that sentence true or false? "Everything in this book is a lie" is in the book, so is it a lie? If so, wouldn't it be speaking the truth, and so then how could it be a lie.... yeah, the liar paradox, up front and center. If you are under any illusions that this has been solved, just type "liar paradox" into Amazon's search box above to see pages and pages of books by the brightest contemporary philosophers who are still wrestling with it. The fact is that the notion of truth has serious problems, and the best efforts we have of defining it or clarifying it have ended in absurdity. When you have come to terms with this fact you are ready for this book. If we take seriously Wittgenstein's metaphor for language--its not a mirror which reflects reality, its rather a game--then we will want to know how to play the game to win. This book will help you do that.

Highly Under-Rated

I found this book rather entertaining. The informality used will catch you off guard, but it will also keep you reading. The Author has some pretty neat idea's to share. I'm gonna quote the Author here, First page: This book is not titled, "How to argue Logically," or "How to argue Fairly," but "How to argue Effectively". So that's what it does. Overall I'd say it's worth picking up. Don't expect them to teach you this stuff anywhere else.

"Raadschelders approaches public administration history from a dual perspective, as trained historian and professor of public administration.... This the best introductory work I've seen about administrative history. The main text is readable and insightful, but perhaps the most useful part is the enormous thematically arranged bibliography at the end.

really good overview of pensions

This is a good overview of various types of pensions. It's helpful if you and your spouse, significant other, or parents are confused about what is and is not allowed under the different pension provisions. It includes non profit pensions so it worked for me. It also helped me consider if I would rollover my pension if I changed jobs. Finally it had understandable pros and cons of Roth IRAs.

Finally, a voice that speaks to ordinary people...

Virtually the entire pension investment and consulting industry is devoted to chasing employers to sell them products or services and speaking and writing well over the heads of the vast majority of the ordinary people who make up the millions of plan participants. It's little wonder that studies show year after year that the American workforce in increasingly mystified by the terms and procedures of their own employee benefit programs. As an ERISA attorney with more than 35 years experience, and founder of an online employee benefits counseling firm, BenefitsZoom.com, I have rarely found a book so well written for the end user of pension plans. Employers would do well to save a few dollars from the big bucks they pay their brokers and pension consultants and include a copy of this book with each summary plan description they distribute about their pension plans.

A Great Resource for Employees

As a pension lawyer, I know how difficult and arcane the pension laws can be. Yet they affect tens of millions of employees. I also know how difficult it can be for employees to get access to an understandable explanation of these pension rules. Without this knowledge, employees are at a real disadvantage in understanding and enforcing their rights. And these rights pertain to many employees' most valuable asset other than their home. This fine book covers the waterfront of all of the important pension concepts and rules in an impressively understandable and readable manner. The reader should not be daunted or intimidated by the subject of pensions when this resource is available. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about their retirement savings and well-being. This is one subject where it pays not to be a "dummy."
