About the Author
Clark D. Neher is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Northern Illinois University. He served as Chair of the Department of Political Science and was Director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies. He is the author or coauthor of numerous books on the region including Southeast Asia in the New International Era.

Very dry, uninspiring and academic

This is essentially a well researched summary of social and political facts pertaining to the countries of SEA mainly around the late 1990's. As someone traveling the region and looking to deepen my understanding of the people, this was the wrong book. It is a very dry and academic tome. The best way to describe it is to give an example. On the chapter concerning Asian culture, the author writes "Asian values is an argument that Asian society and politics should continue to be structured hierarchically." p.65. I found this an utterly boring book and of no value to a traveler of the region.
