An essential read !

Islam is the fastest growing religion with over 2.5 billion followers, or nearly 30% of the world's population, projected by 2050. Therefore a basic understanding of the Quran and its message is imperative for those of us interested in sustainable global development.
In a category of its own, The Quran Speaks, is one of the first highly readable books of its kind to offer Muslims and non-Muslims alike the opportunity to critically examine the most relevant passages of the holy text. Eschewing the usual reliance on religious scholars for interpretation, the author meticulously uses four of the most highly regarded English translations of the Quran, to show agreement on key passages, share commentary, and ultimately allow the reader to arrive at his/her own conclusion regarding the implications for modern society. The book covers common myths about the Quran's writings on science, the position of women in society, on treatment of non-Muslims, the "satanic verses" and other key passages, making them at once accessible and understandable.
I have read more academic treatments on this topic and found them laborious and disconnected from modern society. This is a refreshing treatment of a critical topic, with a well structured and indexed text that flows well, making reading both enjoyable and highly relevant to understanding the "clash of civilizations" that challenges our understanding and creativity, as a global society.
