Enjoyable

Birnbaum and Murray obviously spent a lot of time researching and writing this. The result is not only very insightful into what Washington looks like from the inside, but is also a highly readable exercise in how policy in the US really is made (the authors liken law-making to sausage-making), and how revolutions for high-minded ideals can indeed occur (for all you cynics out there). None of this could ever be found in an encyclopedia because the way Congress works is much more complex than anything an encyclopedia could ever possibly detail. B&M offer not only commentary on the process, but also into the heads of those working on the Hill; something you're not likely to see very often. Finally, if you're ever interested in where your tax dollars go, how the policy got the way it is, and why you're paying what you do, this is an extremely candid review. It's a bit disheartening to know that there are those out there who still 'just don't get it' even after being presented with such a readable presentation of the way our government works, and at this point, I guess they never will.

Still the best case study of congressional decision making

Tax laws may have changed, some of the main actors are serving jail time, but it doesn't matter. This is the best case study of congressional decision making available. I still use this in courses because there is no better example of the tension between political horse trading and genuine reformist impulses available.
Is it detailed? Of course it is: the back and forth in the Ways and Means committee, for example, illustrates the kind of negotiaions that are the bread and butter of policy making.
Is there material that is "in the encyclopedia?" That is silly. There is little there that is basic review. In fact, anyone who found this boring probably does not know the basics of congressional procedures -- that is not the goal of this book -- or has a professor or teacher who does not know how to link a journalistic case study like this with the textbook or scholarly treatment of Congress.
A classic.

This book details a revolution in government. Not a huge revolution like the Aemrican/French/Russian but a revolution deep in the bowels of US Congressional Tax policy. Boring you say? MEGO you scoff? Well, check this one out and be surprised. Bill Bradley, running now- May 1999- for President plays a critical and positive role and anyone contemplating voting for President next year should consider buying this book if only to learn more about Mr Bradley.

Fact or Fiction? Who knows, but it was an interesting book.

I enjoyed this book; it was very easy to read. It is a sad story of someone who is exploited whilst trying to make a better life for herself and her family. There are some unbelievable parts, like the ouija board bits, the love potion and even the ending I found a little far-fetched which made me question whether the book is imbellished in areas to make it more interesting. Plus the characters are naive, but then they do come from a different culture which might explain why they are so trusting (and at times stupid).

Enlightening

I enjoyed this book, although notexactly what I was expecting a very enjoyable read quite frank in parts with a few insights into the thinking and belief's of some of the Thai girls. A must read for all Thai affecionadoes. Look forward to the possible follow up.

On reading ... I love her even more

Vivienne Westwood, the book, is part memoir and part biography of the British icon of fashion. It is not really “co-written” by Westwood – it is more “as spoken to Kelly” because her words are in quotations. But they are extensive. Kelly adds detailed commentaries and summaries of her conversations with him. In addition there are lengthy quotations from associates, her brother Gordon, her two sons Ben (from her first husband Derek Westwood) and Joe (from her second relationship with Malcom McLaren). For some readers this may detract from the flow, but I found it okay except for a few times when I had to check who was making the comments.

The book commences with the 2014 Paris week before starting from the beginning (1941) – from then onwards it is a chronological memoir. It sets the scene of the early 1960s at a time when her first husband briefly managed musicians before most were famous, such as The Who, John Lennon, and Eric Clapton – all emerged from art schools, as Vivienne did. It was a time of the “crossover from art to music and from graphics to sales and marketing … into running businesses that fused pop iconography, fashion, music, and happenings.”

After a brief marriage to Derek, it was her relationship with Malcolm McLaren (her brother’s friend) to 1979 that was intrinsic to her fame. McLaren, the provocative British musician, artist, and band manager of Sex Pistols, brought anarchy, radicalism, and “a restive atmosphere” to Westwood. The volatile relationship also brought a “safe island of creative complicity.” Hence Westwood’s punk period began, as did their iconic shop at 430 Kings Road, “the epicentre of a global fashion revolution.” It was where they reinvented and rebranded fashion, starting with embellishments, slogans, and graphics on T-shirts.

The book details the shop, the clothes, the cuttings, the designs, the partnerships, the journey, the “power to disturb” and the “politicization of clothing.” While many viewed it as the “sexually ambiguous fusion of world-worn … razor-sharp mod, threatening rocker … and safety pins” others viewed it as “degenerate, puerile and willfully ugly.” The book continues with the business, the expansions, the designing, and the making of the fashion.

Vivienne Westwood, the maverick ideas person, was on her own from 1982. While her designs were having a wider impact she “needed to find better, faster and more responsive manufacturers.” During her Italian period she added her name to her designs, and a logo. Her dictum was now, “the more creative you are the more you need a structure.” She moved into her collections and high culture period, as well as human and ecological activism.

The book concludes with her relationship with her husband, designer, and creative partner Andreas Kronthaler, twenty-five years her junior. It tells of their first meeting in 1989 when she was 48 and he was her 23-year-old student. Kronthaler gives a detailed account of his impression the very second he saw her. The rest is history.

McLaren Bashing

It is no secret that, ever since I read "From A to Biba" and "Quant by Quant", there has been a special place in my daydreams for an assuredly idealised and somewhat chronologically inaccurate 1970s King's Road, London. I've often imagined bobbing into Biba for some knee-boots and popping into Mary Quant for some pop-art makeup*. But until I read this bio/auto-bio, I never, but never, envisaged wandering into Dame Vivienne's "Worlds End" store on that same blue-skyed Saturday morning. Perhaps because it is in such a different world altogether from the non-challenging swinging London I have always imagined. I really didn't know that it (and its predecessors, "SEX" for one had even existed. Punk had shops? Who knew?). "Vivienne Westwood" by the woman herself and a journalist who doesn't seem to have any real interest in fashion has set me right. The book is not great literature - the writing is clunky and not fully synthesised - Westwood's lengthy quotes are strung together with some breathless praise (and McLaren bashing). I could have done with more about the process of design and more details about the actual -- err -- clothes, but if you are at all interested in fashion, twentieth-century London, punk or that sort of thing, this is a must-read. (But skip the last enviro-preachy couple of chapters). Mrs Westwood has apparently never suffered from a moment's self-doubt or uncertainty about her own talent or peerless moral goodness which makes for an invigorating read but at times some rather dodgy product.

About the Author
A. Colin Cameron is Professor of Economics at the University of California, Davis. He currently serves as Director of that university's Center on Quantitative Social Science Research. He has also taught at the Ohio State University, and held short-term visiting positions at Indiana University at Bloomington and at a number of Australian and European universities. His research in microeconometrics has appeared in leading econometrics and economics journals. He is coauthor with Pravin Trivedi of Regression Analysis of Count Data (Econometric Society Monograph series No. 30, Cambridge University Press).

Pravin K. Trivedi is John H. Rudy Professor of Economics at Indiana University at Bloomington. He has also taught at The Australian National University and University of Southampton, and has held short term visiting positions at a number of European universities. His research in microeconometrics has appeared in most leading econometrics and health economics journals. He coauthored Regression Analysis of Count Data with Colin Cameron and is on the editorial boards of the Econometrics Journal and the Journal of Applied Econometrics.

Fantastic Book for Empirical Economists

I am using this text to teach a first-year graduate course in econometrics (following a mathematical stats course) at the University of Florida. Myself and my students have been very happy with the intuitive approach of the book, and I have personally appreciated the good end-of-chapter problems that I can assign to my students. This is a GREAT addition to my library and should be on the shelf of any grad student who works with data.

Microeconometrics

The book is useful for current line of microeconometric research. However, its presentation is similar to Greene (Econometrics Analysis). So if you are not comfortable with Green this text will not be best for you.

An A-Z reference

If you want a book for microeconometrics such than whenever you need to look at a topic or subjects related to a topic, this is your book. If you need a very deep and comprehensive discussion about a topic, you need more than this. It may be not sufficient, but for sure it is a necessary book for anyone who does applied econometrics. I enjoy reading this book.
